CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Another Deadly Attack in Iraq

Aired July 21, 2003 - 05:31   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Just hours ago, there was another deadly attack in Iraq.
CNN's Rym Brahimi live in Baghdad with the latest -- what more have you found out for us, Rym?

RYM BRAHIMI, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Carol, we have spoken to U.S. military authorities. Now, they say that one U.S. soldier was killed and his Iraqi interpreter was killed, as well, when their convoy fell under attack. Now, their convoy apparently was attacked by small arms fire. But it also drove over an improvised explosive device.

Witnesses who were at the scene, however, say that they also saw some rocket propelled grenade attacks. It happened at 10:30 a.m., so just a few hours ago, and it happened in a northeastern suburb of Baghdad, which, interestingly enough, is the suburb where Saddam Hussein was last seen on the day that Iraq -- that Baghdad fell, on April the 9th.

Now, this follows, as you know, there are daily attacks. This follows another attack against soldiers in the northern, near the northern city of Mosul. Two soldiers were killed in an ambush, two soldiers from the 101st Airborne. Now, they were ambushed by rocket propelled grenades and small arms fire yesterday, and another soldier was wounded in that attack. And at the same time we have the 3rd I.D. in Falluja, that's been mourning the loss of one of its old. Joel Bertoldie was 20 years old and he was killed when his convoy also drove over an explosive device a couple of days ago.

Now, against this backdrop, Paul Wolfowitz, the secretary -- the U.S. secretary -- sorry, the U.S. deputy secretary of defense, is in town here in Baghdad. He's been meeting with a lot of people. He's been visiting mass graves. He's been talking about the need to bring those accountable to justice, those that are responsible for those mass graves accountable to justice.

He's also been saying that, in his view, he said, "We know that most of the Iraqis are with us and that's why we will win" -- Carol.

COSTELLO: Rym Brahimi reporting live from Baghdad this morning.
