CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

International Wrap, Eye on World

Aired July 14, 2003 - 06:37   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: On the subject of Liberia, David Clinch joins us now.
DAVID CLINCH, CNN SENIOR INTERNATIONAL EDITOR: Yes.

COSTELLO: The president has not decided as of yet whether to send in troops. We're still in Liberia though.

CLINCH: Absolutely. We're keeping our reporting crew there. We actually have been in and out of Liberia for years and certainly for the last few months, and we do not intend to abandon that story.

We're actually covering a story today in Monrovia over massive aid distribution, which the Red Cross is carrying out, the Red Cross and other aid agencies, not having been able to distribute aid in Liberia for months because of the security situation. That has calmed down considerably now.

They are distributing aid today. Our coverage, which was intended to be live, disrupted by the horrible weather -- it's apparently pouring rain in Monrovia -- but the aid is being distributed.

They are having to adjust their plans slightly, because just the idea of aid being distributed can lead to a riot in Monrovia, as we've seen before, so they're being very careful. And we're covering that story today.

COSTELLO: I want to talk about Tony Blair before you have to go.

CLINCH: Yes.

COSTELLO: I know you have to get back to your desk. But Tony Blair and weapons of mass destruction.

CLINCH: Well, yes, and covering -- and following up on what we're reporting from Washington there, and this idea that Tony Blair is coming to Washington later in the week. The United States having dismissed the idea that the claim in the president's State of the Union address, that the British government had evidence that Iraq was trying to get uranium from Africa is not supportable, should have been in the speech.

Well, that's annoyed the British to a certain extent, because they're saying, well, actually, yes, that evidence that the Americans are talking about is not believable, but we have separate intelligence that we believe. So, don't go around telling everyone the British claim is not believable. We have...

COSTELLO: But they can't say it came from. They can prove anything.

CLINCH: No, the British are saying it's actually based on the intelligence of another country, and they can't reveal what that country is, because that country has asked them not to do it.

COSTELLO: But there are rumors flying around, aren't there?

CLINCH: Well, we've been following up on the Italians, the French, some of the people who have been reported to be the source of that information. The Italians have denied it. We're pushing the French on it, but they're all busy celebrating Bastille Day today, so we may have to wait for a denial or otherwise from the French.

COSTELLO: Or an end to Bastille Day. We'll see.

CLINCH: Absolutely.

COSTELLO: David Clinch, many thanks.

CLINCH: OK.
