CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Eye on the Sky: Air Travel Delays

Aired June 23, 2003 - 06:42   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: As you can see, Rally Caparas has flown back to DAYBREAK, and we appreciate your being here because we must know of flight delays or not.
RALLY CAPARAS, AIR TRAFFIC SPECIALIST, TRAVELOCITY.COM: Well I could tell you what a great -- what a great place to visit. If you get a chance, go to South Beach in Miami, it's absolutely wonderful down there. It's like the French Riviera here in the United States.

Anyway, delays, let's talk about it, folks.

If you're headed in to or out of Boston and the New York City Metro airports today, you'll see mostly delay-free schedules. But later on this afternoon, there's a chance of pop-up isolated thunderstorm activity. That means 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays, not guaranteed, but there is a high likelihood of it so be prepared.

Philadelphia to Orlando McCoy, absolutely gorgeous conditions for flying today. Shouldn't see any delays whatsoever.

Down in Miami and Fort Lauderdale, however, I saw how it worked. Four o'clock, set your clock, grab your stuff, run inside, the storms are coming. Expect 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays this afternoon and evening.

Chicago O'Hare, delay-free starts there, but weather is building to the west, as Chad showed you on the map earlier. You can expect 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays if you're headed to or from the west. The east should operate fine. Keep that in mind if you're flying in to or out of Chicago O'Hare today.

Minneapolis-St. Paul, they'll be under the weather most of the day, low clouds, rain, poor visibility. Lighter volume there means only 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays as scattered thunderstorm activity block routes into and out of that major airport.

And then on the West Coast, San Francisco International, they'll see wind-related delays, only 30 minutes or so, bumpy ride at the low altitude. Shouldn't be anything major.

The rest of the west looks perfect.

I'll be back tomorrow morning with the latest from Travelocity's "Eye on the Sky" -- Carol.

COSTELLO: OK, and we're glad you're back once again. CAPARAS: Nice to be here.

COSTELLO: Rally Caparas, many thanks.
