CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

International Market Update: European Stocks

Aired June 20, 2003 - 05:18   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: In Great Britain, the publishing company Bloomsbury is predicting a pretax profit of no less than $25 million. Just about all of that is because of the Harry Potter book.
Let's get more on the financial picture overseas. For that we turn to Hala Gorani live in London.

Good morning -- Hala.

HALA GORANI, CNN FINANCIAL NEWS CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Carol.

Yes, Bloomsbury announced this financial forecast a few hours ago this morning. And the stock of Bloomsbury, the publishing house, is up about 0.8 percent, not much, but in the last few months and in the last few years that stock has doubled, tripled, quadrupled, so doing very well, of course mainly thanks to Harry Potter.

The book about 15 hours away from being released and made public property. As you mentioned, Diana Muriel and Richard Quest is our other anchor on alternating shifts on a 24-hour schedule monitoring that release at Waterstones in Piccadilly Circus. And they are expecting queues and queues of people, lines and lines and individuals who are actually standing in line since this morning in order to get that book.

So Bloomsbury stock, as I said, gaining ground. The company says it is -- that -- I'm sorry, where was I here -- that the sixth book, this is the important part, is already in the pipeline, which is probably why also its stock is gaining ground.

A quick word on what's happening overall on the indices. It's a pretty uncertain and cautious session as investors await some economic data both in the euro zone and in the U.S. All indices are pretty much down either a tenth or a fifth of a percent or up a tenth or a fifth of a percent.

Back to you -- Carol.

COSTELLO: I know, Hala, the excitement over that Harry Potter book has shaken you, too.

GORANI: Right, yes, as much as the David Beckham saga and that one was heart broke for days (ph).

COSTELLO: Exactly. Hala Gorani reporting live from London this morning. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
