CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Eye on the Sky: Air Travel Delays

Aired June 9, 2003 - 06:42   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Heading for the airport this morning, hold on for just a second, it's time to check in with Travelocity's air traffic expert Rally Caparas live on the line.
Rally, good morning.

RALLY CAPARAS, AIR TRAFFIC SPECIALIST, TRAVELOCITY.COM: Good morning, Carol. Good morning, folks.

Well, it looks like we're going to have a really, really good day across the country, at least for most of us. If you're flying into or out of the major airports up in the northeast today, you'll get a rare treat for this time of the year.

Boston Logan Airport, you'll see 30 to 45-minute arrival delays, but that won't last very long. During the p.m. hours, we'll start to see some clearing. But right now they have low clouds, fog and visibility of about -- well, there's about a 300-foot deck of clouds over the airport right now. That'll slow things down for a while. But by noon, we should see some rapid clearly. On-time schedules this evening.

New York City and the D.C. Metros, close to the same type of situation, 30 to 45-minute arrival delays early with low clouds, fog and poor airport surface visibility. But by about 10:00 or 11:00 this morning, we should see clearing. And the sun will be coming out and on-time schedules for the evening rush, so good news in the northeast today.

Down in Florida, they'll get more of what they see every day this time of the year. Tampa, Orlando, Miami and Fort Lauderdale, delay free at the moment; but later on this afternoon, 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays will be a problem as seasonal thunderstorms block flight routes throughout the state of Florida once again.

The central portion of the United States, basically from coast to coast, we're going to see mostly clear, dry conditions and a full day of on-time flight schedules. So we don't see that very often for this time of the year, so enjoy it while it lasts. You know it's not going to last long.

And then finally on the West Coast, San Francisco will see 30 to 45-minute arrival delays, low clouds. The marine layer fog, it rolls in once again. Should be gone by about noon Pacific Time for on-time schedules thereafter.

But the rest of the country we're looking at great conditions, on-time schedules for most.

I'll be back tomorrow morning with the latest from Travelocity's "Eye on the Sky." Carol, back to you in the studio.

COSTELLO: All right, Rally, we appreciate it.
