CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Eye on the Sky: Air Travel Delays

Aired May 6, 2003 - 06:43   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: I know a lot of business travelers watch us in the morning, so want to give you the heads up on any air traffic delays. Let's check in with Travelocity's air traffic expert. Rally Caparas has his "Eye on the Sky."
Rally, more problems today, right?

RALLY CAPARAS, AIR TRAFFIC SPECIALIST, TRAVELOCITY.COM: Carol, you know it. Just as Arch Kennedy told you a few moments ago, it's going to stick around with us for a while. And here's how it's going to affect people, in the East especially.

From New York to the D.C. Metros, you can expect 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays. There'll be low clouds, rain and poor airport surface visibility early with en route thunderstorms limiting flight routes this afternoon and evening.

At Newark's Liberty Airport, they're still transitioning to the new air traffic control tower. That means an average of 60 to 90- minute arrival and departure delays at that airport regardless of the weather.

Atlanta and Charlotte here in the south, 45 to 60-minute arrival and departure delays are likely. Low clouds, poor airport surface visibility and then thunderstorm activity this afternoon and evening as we've seen for the past week or so.

Memphis and Nashville will see 30 to 45-minute arrival and departure delays with heavy rain, poor surface visibility and thunderstorm activity later.

St. Louis Lambert, they'll be nice and pretty for most of the day and then this afternoon and evening, low clouds, rain, severe weather move into the area. Expect 45-minute arrival and departure delays.

And on the West Coast, San Fran, they'll see 30 to 45-minute arrival delays, low clouds, fog, some light rain is possible, poor visibility throughout the day.

The rest of the country is going to look absolutely fantastic once again west of the Mississippi.

I'll be back in the morning with the latest from Travelocity's "Eye on the Sky." Carol, back to you in the studio.

COSTELLO: OK, we sure appreciate it. Thank you, Rally.
