CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

The Brink of War: Fleeing Kuwait

Aired March 18, 2003 - 06:10   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: Well, in the meantime, intelligence officials in Washington and London are concerned that the Iraqi military may try and launch a preemptive chemical or biological attack and that has prompted a mass exodus at the Kuwaiti Airport where people are trying to catch the last flights out.
And that is where we find our Richard Blystone standing by this morning. He's got the latest on that and more.

Hello -- Richard.

RICHARD BLYSTONE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Hello, Leon.

Well, a Kuwaiti airport authority tells us that the flight schedules in and out of Kuwait are proceeding as normal. And warned by their governments to leave, hundreds of expatriates of the thousands who normally work here have been pulling out.

We're showing you some scenes from last night at Kuwait Airport. As you can see, very calm, no hint of panic. Most of the expatriates who were planning to leave, we're told, already have left. They have gone already home.

Few Kuwaitis at this scene, which is interesting. Kuwait City today normal to a fault, balmy weather, everybody going about his or her business, a tinge of apprehension in the air. We'll show you some scenes now of the scene in Kuwait City this morning. What a contrast to what must be going on in Baghdad. There is heightened security here, of course. Police in blue camouflage with their armored vehicles. We're not quite sure how to account for that. There is a threat of terrorism here. And so Kuwaitis, by and large, taking it very easy, trusting in the Americans and then Allah -- Leon.

HARRIS: All right, good deal. Thank you very much. Dick Blystone reporting for us live from Kuwait City.

Good to see you again, Dick.
