CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

When Are People Going to Get to Go Home?

Aired February 18, 2003 - 06:20   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: And thanks to that snow and more snow, many of you have made the airport your second home.
So Rally Caparas, Travelocity's air traffic expert, when are people going to get to go home?

RALLY CAPARAS, TRAVELOCITY: Well, Carol, it's not as simple as when. Here's how it works. Imagine playing a game of chess on a board as large as the United States of America with about 200,000 pieces and them someone grabs the corner of your chess board, shakes it and everything just goes everywhere. Now they're trying to put those schedules back together, and that's what it's going to be, folks.

The airlines are having a very difficult time trying to put things together. There, there are pilots and crews that are stranded, just as a lot of you were or are today and yesterday. And it's going to continue that way. Wednesday is not going to be the day when things get back to normal, I can promise you that. It's going to be more like Thursday or Friday. We could see some things bleed over into next Monday, also.

Here's how it's going to work for you in the Northeast. Boston, Newark and JFK airports, makeshift schedules, snow, deicing, snow removal. It's going to be long waits and many cancellations. I've already seen 700 cancellations this morning for flights headed into the Northeast once again.

LaGuardia scheduled to open at 11:00 a.m. Eastern time. That means lots of cancellations early already. There will be more later. Long waits there again. Philadelphia open, but very long waits. Expect more cancellations. Snow removal still under way.

Baltimore-Washington International is scheduled to open at 3:00 p.m. Eastern time. Nobody's going anywhere there until three, and it's probably going to be a lot more of just crews and essential passengers that have been there for a couple of days.

Reagan National, slow going, scheduled to open 7:00 a.m. We're standing by to see if that actually happens.

And then Washington-Dulles at this point is probably in the best shape. They've been out of most of the snow for quite some time. They have two runways. There will be a lot of activity there, but, again, cancellations and delays will be phenomenal throughout the day.

The rest of the country, you're going to see a lot of delays also related to the Northeast. Beware.

COSTELLO: Oh, I know.

Good luck out there.

Oh, my heart goes out to you.

Thank you, Rally Caparas, with your eye on the sky.

CAPARAS: Sure.

COSTELLO: Very helpful this morning.
