Aired February 18, 2003 - 05:56   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: While the East Coast is dealing with blankets of snow, Tennessee is trying to handle flooding problems. That's the Talk of CNN in Knoxville.
For that, we check in with our friends Andy and Alison and the morning crew from Radio Station WIVK in Knoxville.

Good morning.

ANDY: Good morning.

ALISON: Good morning.

COSTELLO: Boy, we're talking rain. We're talking rain.

ALISON: Oh, yes, we're...

ANDY: I'm telling you. You, five and half inches here in Knoxville area just to the northwest of us in Oak Ridge and Oliver Springs area, eight and eight and a half inches of rain in a, just that about 48 hour period, which is really more than we normally get in a month.

COSTELLO: I've got to tell you, though, folks in the Northeast are praying for just rain.

ANDY: Yes, no kidding. But I'll tell you what, the water in some places where was just as deep as the snow they have there, and in some cases more because of the flooding we've had.

COSTELLO: Oh my goodness, is that a rat I see swimming through the water? What a lovely sight to see -- oh, it's a beaver.

ANDY: Yes.

COSTELLO: It's a beaver, not a rat.

ANDY: Oh, yes, that's OK.

COSTELLO: Thank goodness.

Anyway, tell me, you're experiencing mud slides there, too. So this is a serious problem.

ANDY: Yes, that's right, in fact, the Forest Ridge Apartment complex, they say they will still not be able to go home today because of a -- what had happened, there was a construction site there under way building phase two of this particular apartment complex and all the mud that was build, or dirt at that time, in a pile there after the rain turned into a mud slide and basically crashed a whole apartment building.

COSTELLO: Oh, that's awful.

Now, were you guys going through a drought? I mean is this going to help you in the long run, though?

ALISON: No, in fact, I think we've had more rain this year than we've had in the last couple of years. We've had plenty of rain already.

COSTELLO: Oh, my goodness.

ALISON: So the ground was already saturated and then when the rain came it was just flooding everywhere. In fact, I was going down this road on Sunday and the road was flooded so much the water was above the stop sign.

COSTELLO: Unbelievable.

ALISON: That's how bad it was.

COSTELLO: Unbelievable.

ANDY: But the beavers like it.

COSTELLO: Yes, but the beavers like it.

ALISON: Yes, the beavers do like it.

COSTELLO: He was having a good time.

Hey, Andy and Alison, many thanks to you.

ANDY: Thank you.
