CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Talk of CNN: Northeast Weather

Aired February 17, 2003 - 05:47   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: While it's not getting the snow like the East Coast, temperatures in the Granite State have been below zero for more than a week now. Of course New Hampshire is also on the East Coast. Want to see how people are handling it there.
Mark Ericson and Danielle Carrier, better known as the WOKQ Waking Crew in Portsmouth and Manchester, New Hampshire, that's a mouthful, they're on the phone for "The Talk of CNN" - hello.

MARK ERICSON, WOKQ MORNING WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: Good morning -- Carol.

COSTELLO: You know over the weekend I was in Fairfield, Connecticut, and it was so cold there.

ERICSON: How cold was it? I'm sorry.

COSTELLO: Well it was nine -- it was nine degrees yesterday, I almost couldn't breathe. How could you stand it up there?

DANIELLE CARRIER, WOKQ MORNING WAKING CREW, PORTSMOUTH AND MANCHESTER, NEW HAMPSHIRE: No, actually yesterday was a nice day compared to what it's been.

COSTELLO: Get out.

CARRIER: No, seriously.

ERICSON: Honest to goodness, we have had about 10 days of just what we say in the Northeast a wicked cold snap where temperatures have been at zero or below zero and wind chills in northern New Hampshire have been just unbelievable. Ski areas are loving it. Ski areas have got plenty of snow so far this season. And while this next storm that is on the way and is hitting some parts of the Eastern seaboard today isn't going to dump a lot on ski country in the Northeast, we're going to have plenty of cold temperatures and we've got plenty of a base to work with. So the ski areas are real happy this season.

COSTELLO: Is it causing any problems, because that the temperature is that low for so many days in a row that's got to be causing problems?

ERICSON: We've had some schools closed because the buses wouldn't start. We've got a couple of things closed this morning because there were no heat in some buildings. And with all of this too, with the cold and flu season happening, we had a bunch of schools closed, what, last week because too many bus drivers were out sick and they just couldn't get drivers.

COSTELLO: Unbelievable. Well, Mark and Danielle, thanks for joining DAYBREAK this morning and bundle up.

ERICSON: Have a good one, Carol.

CARRIER: Thank you.

COSTELLO: You too.
