Apparent Hijack Attempt on Italian Jet is Over

Aired November 27, 2002 - 11:03   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to bring you up to date on a breaking news story we've been covering for the hour, what was described as an attempted hijacking of an Al Italia flight originating in Bologna, Italy, was diverted to Lyon, France while it was on route to Paris after reports of a man on board possibly wielding some kind of a weapon.
Joining me is Marie Folch, with the Rhone province, which is the equivalent of a county here in the United States, where the city of Lyon is located.

Mr. Folch, we understand you know a little bit more about this hijacker and what happened on board. What do you know?

MARIE FOLCH, LYON STATE COMMUNICATIONS: This hijacker, his name is Stephano Sevorini. He was born in April, 1973 in Italy. He handled a box that looks like a bomb that we don't know what kind of weapon it was. We don't know if the pilot landed by himself in Italy or if he was forced by the hijackers.

There were 67 persons on board and seven crew members. They got off the plane. Nobody was hurt, and the man was arrested when he got off.

LIN: Did he make any sort of threats while he was holding this box?

FOLCH: I can't hear you.

LIN: I'm sorry, Miss Folch, did he say anything when he was holding this box?

FOLCH: No, so far we don't know. We will have more information later, but we don't know so far what he said.

LIN: Do you know if he had any criminal history?

FOLCH: We just think that he was crazy. I mean, he was someone that was kind of sick or -- but we don't know if he had a criminal history.

LIN: Have you had a chance to hear from any of the passengers who described what exactly happened on board?

FOLCH: No, so far, we don't have -- but at 6:00, we have a press conference, so you will have more elements maybe.

LIN: All right. So, so far, you have described him as a 29- year-old Italian national, right?

FOLCH: Yes.

LIN: His first name is Stephan?

FOLCH: Stephano Sevorani (ph).

LIN: And he is in police custody now.

FOLCH: Excuse me.

LIN: He is in police custody now?

FOLCH: Yes, he is.

LIN: And all the passengers, fortunately, are safe. Thank you very much, Marie Folch. She is with the Rhone province, which is where the city of Lyon is actually located.
