CNN SUNDAY MORNING

Butler Story May Have Wide-Ranging Implications for Monarchy

Aired November 10, 2002 - 08:01   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

RENAY SAN MIGUEL, CNN ANCHOR: Newspapers in Britain are rife with revelations from Princess Diana's former butler. CNN's Robyn Curnow joins us live from London with the latest rumor to surface. Good morning, Robyn.
ROBYN CURNOW, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning. Today, things have taken an about-turn. The story moves away from Paul Burrell, Princess Diana's butler, the man who sold his story to "The Daily Mirror," and has been telling very interesting things, but not that particularly scandalous details about Diana's life.

What does -- today, his story focuses on his wife's story about how their life with Diana and Charles and worked out. But when we think about, when we look at the newspapers today, the biggest story is other tabloids. There's been a huge tabloid war here. And the big, big revelation that has potentially damaging consequences for the monarchy at large is a tape that came out during Paul Burrell's trial.

And in that tape, there were allegations of rape, homosexual rape by one of Charles' aides, one of Charles' servants on another man in the palace. And this man has come out in the newspapers today. He has identified himself. There is a photograph of him here on the front page of "The Sunday Mail." And he's saying, I was raped by Charles' servants.

And other also, the palace secret that could bring down the monarchy. That's in the "Sunday Express." It's these sort of headlines that have shifted away from the Paul Burrell story to far greater implications, perhaps.

SAN MIGUEL: Robyn Curnow, reporting from London, thanks for the latest on the developing situation out there.
