Talk of CNN: Web Site Offers Unique Service

Aired October 29, 2002 - 05:53   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: There is a new extreme form of entertainment. Ooh, that's one big hot topic this morning in Tennessee. We want to check in with Andy and Alison and the morning crew from radio station WIVK in Knoxville.
Hi, guys.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hi, how are you?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Hi. How you guys doing?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Good morning.

COSTELLO: Boy, you guys sound happy this morning.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Hey.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, we have to be, we're paid for it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: That's right. It's our job to be happy.

COSTELLO: Hey, same here.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes.

COSTELLO: Let's talk about this strange Web site and what it means.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, extremekidnapping.com, we talked to the guy who put this all together yesterday and, you know, some people jump out of airplanes, parachutes and all that kind of thing, for extreme sports. Now there's another kind of extreme entertainment coming along and this is where you can pay these guys, you know, a sum of cash depending on what you want and they'll kidnap you and take you through a realistic kind of, you know, of sensory deprivation, like put you in the room, blindfold you and all this, for entertainment purposes.

COSTELLO: You've got to be kidding.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: No, and it starts at just $500.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That's right.

COSTELLO: Oh, yah, what a bargain. UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: It's a gift for somebody who has everything, you know?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: In fact, we're getting you a gift certificate for Christmas.

COSTELLO: Oh, actually, I'd like to get that for Chad this Christmas. A question, though, is anyone taking up this guy on his offer?

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Apparently he says he's had several people do it. In fact, like he said in the low double digits. So I'm thinking it's somewhere around 40 or 50 people who have done it already. And apparently he has a crew of four or five people who will, you know, meet with you ahead of time, make sure you understand what's going to be going on. You know, because you want to know about it. I mean you can't not know.

COSTELLO: Well, you want to meet with your kidnapper to discuss how they're going to do it, where they're going to take you.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, right, you know?

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: And then within 48 hours somewhere, somehow, they're going to kidnap you. But you don't know when.

COSTELLO: You know, I can just see this getting out of hand.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: That was my first question. I mean what about if you're walking down the street one day, suddenly, you know, Chad beside you there is kidnapped and you think it's real? I mean how do you keep from like somebody shooting these guys or something and they -- that's part of it.

COSTELLO: Yes, exactly. And I think Chad would sue me.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Yes, no kidding? Well, hopefully Chad would know.

COSTELLO: OK.

CHAD MYERS, CNN CORRESPONDENT: That's right.

COSTELLO: Thanks, guys.

Nice talking to you this morning.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: You got it.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: Thank you.
