CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

What's on Tap in Washington, D.C. Today?

Aired October 28, 2002 - 06:12   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: Justice in the sniper case is just one of the stories our Washington bureau is covering today. Want to find out what else is going on with CNN's Washington deputy bureau chief Steve Redisch.
Good morning -- Steve.

STEVE REDISCH, CNN WASHINGTON DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning -- Carol.

COSTELLO: President Bush, I would guess, is still campaigning with what, about nine days until Election Day?

REDISCH: Eight days. Eight campaigning days left before Election Day. And, yes, the president is starting his day in Phoenix and will do a little campaigning there and go over to Alamogordo, New Mexico and do a little campaigning there and wind up his day in Denver before flying home to Washington.

COSTELLO: What a pace he's setting. Wasn't he just in Mexico over the weekend?

REDISCH: Just in Mexico at the -- at the Asian Pacific Economics Summit where No. 1 on the agenda was the North Korea nuclear weapons program. But one of the things President Bush came away -- did not come away with is a firm commitment from Mexico, a Security Council member, to support the U.S.' tough stance on Iraq at the -- at the U.N.

COSTELLO: Got you. And you heard about this shooting at Jordan of the American diplomat?

REDISCH: Yes.

COSTELLO: Do you think the president will come out and say anything about this?

REDISCH: Not sure if the president will come out and say anything about it or where the U.S. reaction will be. The president will have several opportunities, if he does want to say something about it, to do so. We are checking with our State Department sources at the moment to...

COSTELLO: Yes.

REDISCH: ... find out where the reaction will come.

COSTELLO: And I suspect if he does, we'll carry that live.

Steve Redisch, thank you very much. We'll let you get down to the Washington bureau.
