CNN BREAKING NEWS

Shooter Claims Three Lives at University of Arizona

Aired October 28, 2002 - 14:28   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MARTIN SAVIDGE, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to take you now back to the University of Arizona, where there has been a shooting. At least four people are dead. And for that, we are joined by Miguel Martez; he is with our CNN affiliate, and that is KSAZ. Go ahead, sir.
MIGUEL MARTEZ, KSAZ CORRESPONDENT: Yeah, we are here at the University of Arizona Medical Center. You can see it there, bringing some extra resources here. Four people dead, three of them apparently victims. The fourth person, the suspect in this shooting, also dead, apparently from a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Police are not confirming that at this point.

Here's what they say did happen, though: At 8:40 this morning, they got a call from the College of Nursing saying there was a shooting here on campus. When they -- after they arrived, they locked down the building and discovered three bodies and the apparent shooter with a bomb -- or excuse me, with a bag underneath his body. They were concerned that there was a bomb because they had had a bomb scare here about two weeks ago. Someone called in a bomb threat. They think it may have been this shooter. They searched his car with the bomb dogs, and the dogs alerted on the suspect's car, and that's when they locked down the entire area here. The College of Pharmacy, the College of Nursing, where the shootings occurred, and the hospital are all locked down.

The rest of the campus, though, is up and running today. But four dead here at the University of Arizona.

The president of the university spoke a short time ago, saying that even though this is obviously now a national issue, they are treating it as a very local shooting, and it's certainly their family who have died here today.

Tucson police are now conducting the investigation down here, taking it from the hands of the University of Arizona Police Department. Back to you at CNN.

SAVIDGE: And, Miguel, this is all over now? There is no more concern about any other lives being lost?

MARTEZ: The president of the university spoke very positively about that, that he believes that this is an isolated, very specific operation this person undertook, and does not believe that the rest of the university or that anybody else is in harm's way right now.

SAVIDGE: Miguel Martez, thank you very much, joining us from CNN affiliate KSAZ in Arizona. Thank you once again.
