CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

Talk of CNN: Kirby Puckett; Jesse Ventura

Aired October 23, 2002 - 06:49   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: One of the most popular sports heroes in Minnesota is in some trouble with the law. That's the topic of this morning's "Talk of CNN" with "The Dave Ryan in the Morning Show," 101.3 KDWB Minneapolis St. Paul.
Good morning, guys.

DAVE RYAN, "THE DAVE RYAN IN THE MORNING SHOW," 101.3 KDWB MINNEAPOLIS ST. PAUL: Good morning, Catherine, how are you?

CALLAWAY: Doing well.

RYAN: Good.

CALLAWAY: Just talking about the Kirby Puckett story. Apparently some sexual assault charges filed against him. I bet a lot of your listeners are talking about that.

RYAN: It's -- you know it's really an interesting thing, Catherine, because Kirby has always stood up as one of those guys where you would say well, yes, this athlete did this, this athlete did this and this athlete did this. But look at Kirby, Kirby was always put on a pedestal, very respected, very, very, very beloved in Minnesota and it's a big shock to hear about these charges. I mean I'm not particularly a baseball fan, but I've met Kirby several times. He's always been very nice, very gracious to us; and it's difficult for people to believe, to mesh the Kirby that they've heard about and read about lately with the Kirby they've known for so long.

CALLAWAY: Hey, but you've got to remember, innocent until proven guilty.

RYAN: Absolutely, yes.

CALLAWAY: We're so quick to tear down our heroes, aren't we?

RYAN: Well that's one of the things I think people in Minnesota, we follow the news but I think people really want to give Kirby the benefit of the doubt fairly or unfairly. And I think fairly because why, he's been such an upstanding citizen for all these years. And you hear something like this, it's like you're hearing something about a friend of yours and going no, he wouldn't do that.

CALLAWAY: Hasn't he done a lot for the community there?

RYAN: He's -- yes, he has an invitation Eight Ball Tournament every year that raises money for, I'm not absolutely sure of the charity, but I believe it's for sick children, yes.

CALLAWAY: Yes, let's talk about another hero to some, which is, of course, Governor Jesse Ventura. What's -- he's leaving office early?

RYAN: Let's hope so.

ANGI TAYLOR, "THE DAVE RYAN IN THE MORNING SHOW," 101.3 KDWB MINNEAPOLIS ST. PAUL: Governor Ventura has been talking about leaving office early for a while. We're hearing now that he wants to leave before elections to give the lieutenant governor, who is a woman, Mae Schunk, he wants to give her the opportunity to be the first woman governor.

CALLAWAY: Oh really?

TAYLOR: Yes.

CALLAWAY: Well what do you think abut that -- Angi?

TAYLOR: I think that might be a ploy to just get out of office early and maybe go to Cuba on vacation, I don't know.

CALLAWAY: Oh you guys are bad.

RYAN: Well people have become in Minnesota very cynical of Jesse. And it's an unfortunate thing because we really -- he was really kind of the people's governor when he first started. It was like, wow, here's a guy who was not a politician at all and become the governor and we really, really wanted him to do well. But he's really kind of made such a mockery of the office in many ways and -- that it's been kind of an embarrassing run, I think.

CALLAWAY: All right. Everyone has a different opinion, I guess.

RYAN: Sure they do.

CALLAWAY: All right, Dave. Thank you very much you guys. Angi, have a good day.

RYAN: Thank you, Catherine.

TAYLOR: Thank you.
