CNN LIVE AT DAYBREAK

What's on Tap for D.C. Today?

Aired October 21, 2002 - 06:05   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: The search for the sniper is just one of the stories we'll be covering from Washington all day long.
Our Washington deputy bureau chief, Steve Redisch, is joining us on the phone.

Good morning -- Steve.

STEVE REDISCH, CNN WASHINGTON DEPUTY BUREAU CHIEF: Good morning, Catherine.

CALLAWAY: Certainly, the sniper, a big concern in the bureau.

REDISCH: It is the No. 1, 2 and 3 concern in the bureau. As you saw, we have -- we are live outside the hospital in Richmond, we are live in Ashland, Virginia, where the investigation goes on, as well as in Montgomery County, Maryland, where the task force is centered.

CALLAWAY: You know, what is the next step? Now that this is moving south, we obviously have reporters down in Richland as well.

REDISCH: Exactly. You know, the I-95 corridor...

CALLAWAY: Ashland, I'm sorry, Steve -- I meant to say Ashland.

REDISCH: In Ashland, and the next step is to -- from what I can tell is to get the bullet and get the -- find out whether the bullet matches the other bullets that have been recovered from the other sniper scenes, and make that match.

But it seems like with the message that Chief Moose has sent to whoever left the note at the Ponderosa, they seem to be tying this shooting in Ashland to the sniper attacks.

CALLAWAY: We're also seeing some of the funerals for the victims taking place, too.

REDISCH: The latest one, the last victim directly connected to sniper, victim Linda Franklin, will be -- her funeral is scheduled to happen today, this morning, in Arlington, Virginia.

CALLAWAY: We know there's other news going on. We know that we're going to see the Joint Chiefs chairman hold a news conference today.

REDISCH: He and Secretary Rumsfeld will hold a briefing at the Pentagon today. I'm not sure exactly what is on Secretary Rumsfeld's mind, but he will be taking questions from the Pentagon press corps.

And Lord Robertson, the NATO secretary-general, will be at the Pentagon today, and Secretary Rumsfeld will host an honor cordon for him.

CALLAWAY: All right, Steve, thank you very much. Have a good day.

REDISCH: Bye-bye.
