'Talk of CNN'

Aired October 18, 2002 - 05:44   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL COSTELLO, CNN ANCHOR: It is now time for the "Talk of CNN," the time we plug into local radio stations across the country for their big stories. It is Friday and that's when we check in with KDMX in Dallas. The show is "Jeff and Anna in the Morning."
Good morning -- Jeff and Anna.

JEFF: Hello.

ANNA: Hey.

JEFF: How are you?

COSTELLO: I'm fine. How are you guys doing?

JEFF: Doing great.

COSTELLO: Hey, I hear that the Washington sniper story is especially resonating in Texas -- why?

JEFF: Well, you know, I mean we had a -- we have a pretty famous history with a sniper if you go back, you know, to JFK. And...

COSTELLO: Oh yes, the Texas Tower.

ANNA: Of course you know he had a specific target. I mean it's not like what's going on in the Washington, D.C. area, he's just shooting people at random. I think...

COSTELLO: Well you also had the Texas Tower incident, a sniper there who ran...

ANNA: Yes.

JEFF: Yes.

COSTELLO: Who stayed up there for, what, 93 hours shooting at people?

ANNA: Gosh, in Austin. God, that was in the '60s. Oh!

JEFF: Yes, that was -- that was quite an event as well. This is such a -- it's such a frightening and bizarre story...

COSTELLO: Oh yes.

JEFF: ... as we watch it unfold on this end. COSTELLO: Oh yes. Are people afraid there? Has the fear spread to the Dallas area?

ANNA: Well you know what, everyone's talking about it. No matter where you go, people go, hey, well, so what do you think about the whole Washington, D.C. sniper? I guess what resonates with everybody is that it could happen anywhere.

COSTELLO: Oh yes, definitely. Hey, did you hear about the bogus witness who came forward and gave police false information?

ANNA: Isn't that sick?

COSTELLO: It is. We were asking our viewers if he should be charged with something.

JEFF: Oh...

ANNA: Absolutely.

JEFF: You know what, make something up if you have to.

ANNA: Yes.

JEFF: But, gee, I definitely -- I mean that's...

ANNA: Did he just want to -- the notoriety or what?

COSTELLO: We don't know, police aren't really saying much about it; but they are -- they are reviewing the case to see if they can file charges. I especially liked one viewer who e-mailed us and said that his punishment should be, if he is charged of course and convicted, should be to pump gas for everyone in Washington for a period of 30 days.

ANNA: Yes. We love that idea.

JEFF: Yes, that's very good.

COSTELLO: Isn't it? Yes, I thought it was very clever.

JEFF: Yes.

COSTELLO: Hey, let's talk about Billy Graham because he is coming to Dallas?

ANNA: Oh he...

JEFF: He's here.

ANNA: He's...

COSTELLO: He's there.

JEFF: Yes.

ANNA: He started his Metroplex Mission last night at Texas Stadium. His first visit in over 30 years to Texas Stadium.

JEFF: Yes, he was the very first event at Texas Stadium back in 1971 before the Cowboys even played there. And he is in town, will be here for the entire weekend and it's an amazing story.

COSTELLO: It is an amazing story. He's suffering from Parkinson's disease, he's very frail and this could be his last public appearance like this.

ANNA: They said last night that he was amazing. That he -- his voice actually got stronger as he went on. And it was a packed house last night at Texas Stadium and they expect it to be that way for the rest of the weekend.

COSTELLO: Oh I'm sure it will be.

Jeff and Anna, thank you very much for joining us this Friday to talk about things happening in your neck of the woods.
