Sniper Hunt: Truck Image Yields Tips

Aired October 14, 2002 - 06:09   ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CATHERINE CALLAWAY, CNN ANCHOR: A relatively quiet weekend in the D.C. area. There were no sniper attacks. The sniper hasn't struck on a Saturday or a Sunday since the shooting rampage began on October 2.
And for the latest on this investigation, let's turn now to CNN's Jeanne Meserve, who is in Montgomery County, Maryland.

Good morning -- Jeanne.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Catherine. As you mentioned, the second weekend with no sniper activity.

The man who is heading up this investigation won't comment on what that means or what Monday may bring.

(BEGIN VIDEO CLIP)

CHIEF CHARLES MOOSE, MONTGOMERY COUNTY POLICE: We are -- won't make any assumption about any kind of pattern, and I never approach Monday morning with a sense of dread. It is a blessing each day that I wake up, and so, we will continue to function that way.

(END VIDEO CLIP)

MESERVE: Police did put out a composite over the weekend of a white truck. This, they said, had been seen by several people at several locations. Since this was put out, tip lines have been flooded with calls.

We are expecting a second composite; this of a white Astro van of the sort seen at the site of the shooting Friday in Spotsylvania County. No word on exactly when we will see that.

CNN has learned that investigators asked the Army and Navy to review their records and see if they have any current or recently- discharged sniper-trained personnel in the greater D.C. area. According to a senior Army official, that came up empty. There are currently no military-related suspects.

And meanwhile, the task force has cut back communications with the media and potentially with the sniper. No briefing is scheduled here until noon.

Catherine -- back to you.

CALLAWAY: All right, Jeanne, thank you very much. That's Jeanne Meserve in Montgomery County, Maryland.
