ANDERSON COOPER, CNN ANCHOR: Well, through the night in Memphis, Tennessee, rock and roll pilgrims are holding their candles aloft, paying homage to the king.
CNN's Sean Callebs is there to witness all that memory making.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

SEAN CALLEBS, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): One by one they came, lighting candles from a torch ignited by the eternal flame near Presley's grave site. Many waiting hours, at times in the pouring rain, just for the chance to offer a quiet tribute.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: He just touched my heart. Music is at the root of a lot of pleasure for a lot of people. And it just, it fills your heart full of good feelings.

UNIDENTIFIED FEMALE: He just has a wonderful spirit, I think. It's beautiful.

CALLEBS: Outside of the gates, an ocean of flickering lights, a visual tribute to the king of rock and roll. Fans want to see where Elvis is buried and his Graceland mansion where he lived. Twenty- three rooms, more than 17,000 square feet and, since Graceland opened to the public in 1982, 12 1/2 million fans have paraded through.

ANGIE MARCHESE, GRACELAND CURATOR: It's not just Elvis' home, but -- and it's not just a mansion. It was always, it's very homey inside, you know? You feel very comfortable inside and you can see where Elvis and his friends would hang out.

CALLEBS: It screams 1970s -- lots of shag carpet and lots and lots of TVs, 14 in all. While you can tour downstairs, this is as close as you can get to the upstairs, including where Elvis died.

MARCHESE: It was Elvis' little private getaway.

CALLEBS: While the house hasn't changed since the king died in 1977, his fans have.

UNIDENTIFIED MALE: Well, since my baby left me...

CALLEBS: Sean Callebs, CNN, in Memphis, Tennessee.
