America's New War: Destruction Statistics to Date

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: New York City Mayor Rudy Giuliani will address the U.N. General Assembly today. Members there are beginning a week long debate on measures to fight world terrorism. Mayor Giuliani is also playing host to a congressional, a series of congressional leaders from Capitol Hill who have come to New York to see the devastation up close.

Mayor Giuliani presented the latest numbers from the World Trade Center attacks at a Sunday news conference. So far the number of confirmed dead, 314. The number of dead who have been identified, 255. The number of missing persons reported to the family center, 4,657. The number of missing persons compiled by the police department from six separate sources, which means there will be likely some redundancy, 5,219. The number of people who have applied for death certificates, 1,074. The number of tons of debris that have been removed from the site, 144,629. The number of truck loads that were required to remove it, 9,748. All numbers adding up to this disaster.

LEON HARRIS, CNN ANCHOR: And there's still more to come as far as those truck loads go, too. We'll keep our eye on that process as it develops.
