Israel Launches Military Offensive Against Palestinian Targets

Aired April 3, 2001 - 2:17 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: And we'll continue with that story in just a moment, but we have breaking news in another part of the world we want to bring you now. In the Middle East, word that Israel has launched another military offensive against the Palestinians, and we have with us now Mike Hanna, who is in Jerusalem, who can tell us what's happening there tonight -- Mike.

MIKE HANNA, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, Natalie, the Israeli Defense Force says that it is carrying out attacks against Palestinian targets; targets, says the Israelis, associated with what it calls acts of terrorism against Israeli civilians.

The Israeli Defense Force says that a number of selected targets in Palestinian territories near the Rafah border crossing into the Gaza Strip are being attacked with missiles, both from the air and from the ground, says the Israeli military.

This follows a mortar attack in midafternoon. Three mortars fell on a Jewish settlement in the Southern Gaza Strip, seriously injuring a 10-month-old baby and the baby's mother, a Jewish settler living in the Gush Katif settlement enclave within the Gaza Strip.

So, Israel carrying out a military action, it says, against selected Palestinian targets, it says in retaliation for an afternoon mortar attack which a 10-month-old Jewish baby was seriously injured and its mother was also wounded -- Natalie.

ALLEN: All right, we'll keep in close contact with you. Thanks, Mike, on any further developments in the story there in the Middle East.
