Sixteen-Year-Old Dead in School Shooting

Aired March 30, 2001 - 12:39 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We have another shooting, this time at another high school. Gary, Indiana, this time at Lew Wallace High School. We're getting reports of a 16-year-old sophomore dead and another student, a former student who is expelled from the school last year, in custody.

We have on the line with us the Gary Indiana chief of police, John Roby.

Chief, can you tell us what happened?

JOHN ROBY, GARY, INDIANA, POLICE CHIEF: Yes. Basically before school started this morning, we had a shooting. We have a 17-year-old suspect in custody. And we have a 16-year-old dead. This happened in the parking lot of the school.

WATERS: Was this before school began?

ROBY: This was before school, about 7:50.

WATERS: And I have you quoted as saying "it was not a random shooting." Upon what is that based?

ROBY: Pardon me?

WATERS: I have you quoted as saying "it was not a random shooting."

ROBY: No, it was not a random shooting. The suspect walked up to the victim, put the gun to his head and fired it.

WATERS: Do you have any motive? Do you know why?

ROBY: No, no. We are in the process getting all that together now.

WATERS: So you have a 17-year-old in custody.

ROBY: That's correct.

WATERS: And a 16-year-old is dead.

ROBY: That's correct.

WATERS: Thank you, Chief.

ROBY: OK.

WATERS: John Roby...

ROBY: OK.

WATERS: ... Gary, Indiana, chief of police.

Again, the shooting at Lew Wallace High School in Gary, Indiana, this morning before school started. The shooting occurred at about 8:15 Central time, as students were waiting outside for the doors to open.

The superintendent says crisis counselors are now at the school. Some parents have come to pick up their children. But most of the pupils are still in the building, and will be dismissed at the normal time this afternoon.

So we regretfully have to report another school shooting here on CNN.
