Two U.S. Fighter Jets Missing in Scotland

Aired March 26, 2001 - 10:28 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: All right, a breaking news story we're continuing to follow this morning. Two U.S. fighter jets missing today while in a training exercise. We're going to go to our CNN military affairs correspondent Jamie McIntyre with more information on the story -- Jamie, what can you tell us?

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Well, very little at this point. The Pentagon is confirming that two F15-Es, U.S. Air Force F15-Es, those are two seat fighter planes capable of dropping bombs, were apparently on some kind of a routine mission over Scotland. They were due back at the Lakenheath Air Base just east of London, England when apparently they are now over due. They were supposed to be back by now.

At this point we can't confirm what has happened to the two planes, whether they were involved in an accident or simply delayed for some other reason. But it is a cause of concern. The Pentagon confirms only that the two planes are overdue for their return to Lake and Heath Air Base in England after performing the mission over Scotland and there is a search going on to find out what happened to those two planes.

We'll try to keep you posted. That's all we can tell you at this point.

PHILLIPS: All right, Jamie McIntyre, thank you. We will continue to follow this story.
