Hijacked Russian Plane Lands In Saudi Arabia

Aired March 15, 2001 - 10:51 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We want to update you now on this hijacking story we've been following all morning long. This is a Russian passenger plane that was hijacked earlier today as it took off from Istanbul.

We're getting word now that that plane has landed, that it has landed in Medina, Saudi Arabia, Saudi newspapers reporting that it landed about 10 minutes ago.

This is a charter airplane that has about 162 passengers on board. The plane had been scheduled today to fly from Istanbul from Moscow, but very soon after it took off, we understand -- we're getting reports -- two hijackers overtook the plane and ordered it to fly, obviously, in a different direction.

We have no word on the condition of the crew, the passengers or the hijackers at this point -- we know only that this hijacked plane has indeed landed in Medina, Saudi Arabia.
