Military Accident: U.S. Plane Drops Bomb on Civilians in Kuwait

Aired March 12, 2001 - 2:17 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to go back to Jeanne Meserve in Washington.

(COMMERCIAL BREAK)

WATERS: I'm not sure what's going on, but I'm trying to get to Jeanne Meserve in Washington, a breaking story in the Persian Gulf.

JEANNE MESERVE, CNN ANCHOR: Lou, I am here. Government sources tell CNN that there has been a military accident over Kuwait. Sources saying that a U.S. Air Force F-18 from the carrier Harry S. Truman dropped a bomb into a crowd of civilians in Kuwait. Information very sketchy at this point. We understand there have been casualties. The number is uncertain. But CNN has been told the number expected to be 10 or less.

More details expected from the Pentagon shortly. We will bring them to you as soon as we have them.

Lou, back to you.

WATERS: All right, Jeanne Meserve, we'll keep in close touch with you.
