Journalist Describes Pennsylvania School Shooting

Aired March 7, 2001 - 1:19 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: As we mentioned moments ago, a girl was shot at a high school in central Pennsylvania today. It happened at Bishop Neumann High School. That is in Williamsport, Pennsylvania, about 164 miles west of Philadelphia.

We have on the line with us now Bob Rolley, with the "Williamsport Sun-Gazette."

Bob, what can you tell us about what happened at that school?

BOB ROLLEY, "WILLIAMSPORT SUN-GAZETTE": Well, I could tell you that around noon we heard a dispatch of a shooting at a school. Subsequently, we learned that it was Bishop Neumann Catholic High School, which is a -- it's a good school.

It's -- we have a strong Catholic community here in Williamsport. It's about a city of 30,000.

The report was that there was shooter somewhere in the school, report that the shooter was in the principal's office a little bit later than we learned. They had talked the shooter into giving them the gun. We then found out it was a female student.

We're still getting some conflicting reports about an injury, if someone was actually shot, but everything's pointing to the fact that there may have been one victim, because an ambulance was dispatched, someone was taken away.

Beyond that, they've cordoned off the school. They have the alleged shooter in custody at City Hall police headquarters. We've got people up there, obviously, at both sides, and we're working to try to obtain more information.

This school's in the city. It's about a mile, really, from downtown, maybe even a little less. It's a real good school, it's a strong, Catholic school. It's got great academics, good sports programs. You know, it's one of the premier Catholic high schools in central Pennsylvania.

ALLEN: Any idea if the person with the gun was a boy, girl, or even a student...

ROLLEY: It's a girl. It's a girl. I mean, that we do know: It's a girl. ALLEN: The person with the gun?

ROLLEY: Yes.

ALLEN: All right. We don't know if this girl was a student.

ROLLEY: Well, we -- yes, we believe, we're pretty sure, it was a student. We're pretty sure.

That school has -- I think it's 7th through 12th grade and a population of about 200, 250 kids.

ALLEN: All right, just to be sure: So what you do know is a girl with a gun possibly shot another girl at this school.

ROLLEY: Well, I don't know about the victim. I don't know the gender of the victim.

ALLEN: OK.

And in fact, we're not even -- we're not 100 percent sure there was a victim, at this point.

ALLEN: All right. And what about the other students in the school, Bob? Where are they now?

ROLLEY: Well, just minutes ago, they've been evacuated. They've moved the security perimeter around the school further away, and it's making it more difficult for us to gather information.

We are -- we do know the shooter is -- the alleged shooter is at City Hall.

But we do know they are -- have or are evacuating the school, and in the process of doing that, we have a lot of frantic parents showing up. And of course, you know, in an incident like this, it's -- it's a tragedy.

But this is a good school. This is a real good school.

ALLEN: All right, we thank you so much, Bob Rolley with the "Williamsport Sun-Gazette."

Again, this happened at Bishop Neumann High School, a Catholic school there in central Pennsylvania. Not sure yet if anyone was actually shot.

But we will continue to follow the story and bring you any more developments. This, of course, happening two days after the shooting in Santee, California, where two students were killed.
