Aired March 3, 2001 - 1:38 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DONNA KELLEY, CNN ANCHOR: Hello, I'm Donna Kelley at the CNN center in Atlanta. We'll be back to our program in just a moment, but first we want to tell you about a military plane that has crashed with 21 people aboard. CNN has confirmed that this crash happened about 10 miles north of Pinehurst, Georgia. It's a C-23 National Guard -- Sherpa National Guard plane. Happened a couple of hours ago, around 10:00 in the morning Saturday.

Twenty-one people onboard. Apparently three crewmembers from the Florida Army National Guard and 18 passengers -- that's according to a spokesman at guard headquarters in Florida. It's a six-wing propeller aircraft used by special ops -- by special operations. This spokesperson, a Florida Nation Guard spokesman told CNN he did not know whether there were any survivors. It's being investigated by the national Guard and the Federal Aviation Administration.

It came from the 171st aviation battalion; left Saturday morning from Lakeland, Florida and, according to the spokesperson, they're telling us that they're trying to get families notified as quickly as possible.

So once again, a C-23 National Guard plane crashing 10 miles north of Pinehurst, Georgia around 10:00 this morning, Saturday, with 21 people onboard. And a spokesman telling CNN he does not know if there were any survivors.

We will keep you posted on any new details we get right here on CNN; and now back to "SCIENCE & TECHNOLOGY WEEK."
