High-Speed Chase Ends in Arrests of Suspected Bank Robbers

Aired March 2, 2001 - 3:24 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

JOIE CHEN, CNN ANCHOR: Welcome back at CNN. We want to bring you some information just into us at CNN, and we want to preface this by pointing out here at CNN we don't normally show you just some high- speed chases, we don't normally cover a bank robbery, but there have been some extraordinary events in the city of Atlanta today. And DeKalb County, one of the neighboring counties of the city, we see a chase under way, an extraordinary effort by a local police officer to stop a suspect, a bank robbery suspect. You see pulling him out. Let's listen to a local reporter on the scene.

LOCAL REPORTER: I see one suspect, one suspect. That was a very bold move that officer made standing out there without any protection other than...

CHEN: Try to bring you more up-to-date information now on what happened throughout this afternoon. And as you're seeing the pictures of this extraordinary stopping of a suspect in a case, a bank robbery case here in the city of Atlanta. And you see these pictures taken just a few minutes ago shown on live television in the Atlanta area.

I want to bring on the line now Special Agent Richard Kolko to explain to us exactly what happened here today.

Agent Kolko, I understand this started with a tip, somebody who had seen this bank robbery suspect in the city of Atlanta, and that brought officers into the chase. That's correct. This morning -- we work with "Atlanta Journal Constitution," the local newspaper here. They put a picture of this suspected bank robber, or serial bank robber. We actually have him attributed for at least seven robberies in the Atlanta area over the last six months.

After the picture ran in the newspaper, we received a tip that helped identify that person. Our agents are out there doing a logical investigation, standing by, surveying a location. The person came out. We believe we have a name for him now. It's Peter John Hunhe. He's 44 years old. And a fairly lengthy chase ensued where, fortunately, nobody was hurt. And he's now been placed under arrest.

CHEN: The speeds through the city through very busy areas of the city, very high speeds today?

RICH KOLKO, SPECIAL AGENT: It was certainly a dangerous chase. I watched it on TV and saw the suspect go into the wrong lanes, cutting lots of people off, and then at the end where he kind of faced off with that police officer. It was just very fortunate that nobody was hurt.

CHEN: Agent Kolko, thank you very much for being with us. CNN following up on this story. Again, nobody hurt but a pretty dramatic event through the city of Atlanta, an outlying county here today. We're following up on the story. We'll keep you up to date we get more details. Now let's go back to TALKBACK LIVE.
