| Breaking NewsU.S. Submarine Collides With Japanese Fishing BoatAired February 09, 2001 - 10:45 p.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: Once again, good evening. I'm Bill Hemmer live at the CNN Center. We have just received our first videotape from Hawaii, this involving that U.S. submarine that collided earlier with a Japanese fishing boat. Now these pictures against are showing the high school members from Japan who were on board that boat. The information we have now, the Japanese Coast Guard says 35 people on that ship. Thirteen were students, two teachers, 20 crew members. The students again said to be of high school age. A Coast Guard spokesman says 10 people were missing. However, the number is a bit confusing at this time, the Associated Press saying nine are missing. But it is quite understandable this early in the story that some numbers could be different from others. The accident involved the USS Greenville, a Los Angeles class nuclear-powered attack sub based at Pearl Harbor. The Navy says the submarine was on routine operations when it surfaced about four hours ago. That was 1:45 p.m. local time in Hawaii. It happened about 10 miles south of Diamond Head near Honolulu near the island of Oahu. The Navy says it also appears the stern of that submarine may have made contact with the commercial ship that caused it to sink. There is no damage reported to the submarine. Again, the pictures you are seeing right now are people who have been pulled on board the submarine first then transferred to a waiting ship and then taken back to harbor there in Oahu. We will continue to follow it. As we get information, we'll pass it along to you. I'm Bill Hemmer again live in Atlanta. THE SPIN ROOM does continue now live from Washington.
