Texas Escapees: Authorities Investigating Abandoned Van

Aired January 23, 2001 - 2:25 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: Again, the latest on our top story. Police in Colorado Springs, Colorado, hope they are hot one the trail of the two remaining fugitives in that Texas prison escape. Four caught yesterday. This is the scene of the restaurant, and you can see men gathered around that maroon van -- this is the van confirmed to be used by the two remaining fugitives, Patrick Murphy Jr. and Donald Newbury.

Early this morning, when employees arrived at the restaurant, they spotted the van, alerted police, and it's been confirmed it was used by the men. We're now told that police are searching a hotel just behind this restaurant, hoping to find these two.

As we said, just 25 miles up the road, four other fugitives were captured yesterday.

One of the police officers, the investigators on this story, commented about how this group has stayed together -- and I'm going to quote him now. He says this group, the seven of them, bonded like nothing we've seen before. Escapees usually their spread their separate ways when they get out of prison. He added that the four men in custody had been cooperating with law enforcement in their search for these two men you see on your screen there, Murphy and Donald Newbury.

As Frank Buckley of CNN just reported from Denver, we expect a news conference by the FBI 3:00 p.m. Eastern time -- that's 30 minutes from now. CNN will bring you live coverage of that. Perhaps we'll get more on the police investigators whose have found this van and the search for these two men. We'll take a break -- more after this.
