On Last Day in Power, Clinton Administration Fires Linda Tripp

Aired January 19, 2001 - 1:25 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We have another bit of evidence about the end of the Clinton administration. At the top of the broadcast, we told you about the deal reached between Bill Clinton and Robert Ray, the independent counsel, to avoid an indictment of the president of the United States. Now we understand that the Clinton administration has fired Linda Tripp from the Pentagon. She's is the woman, you'll probably all know by now, the woman whose secret tape recordings led to President Clinton's impeachment.

She was fired because she refused to resign like other political appointees, according to her attorney. The same attorneys say the termination of Linda Tripp is vindictive and President Clinton should not have ended his presidency on such a vengeful note.

So more evidence today that George W. Bush will get a fresh start without these remaining bits of business hanging over his new administration. Linda Tripp fired today -- Natalie.

NATALIE ALLEN, CNN ANCHOR: And just when we thought the Clinton deal was the last of it, no: 15 minutes later, there's another related story on the matter.
