Director of Palestinian Television Gunned Down by Masked Men

Aired January 17, 2001 - 8:34 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

CAROL LIN, CNN ANCHOR: From the Middle East this morning, confirmation that the director of Palestinian Television was gunned down by three masked men about an hour ago.

CNN's Matthew Chance joins us now by telephone. He is standing by at the hotel where the attack took place -- Matthew.

MATTHEW CHANCE, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Thanks, Carol.

Well, details are very sketchy at this moment. More details are coming into us as we speak. But we can confirm that Hisham Miki, the director-general of Palestinian Television, has been gunned down and killed while sitting in a restaurant at this beach-front hotel I'm outside of right now as he was sitting in the restaurant.

Now, two masked gunmen, we're told by Palestinian officials at this stage, are believed to have walked in, walked straight up to Mr. Miki and fired a number of shots into him; we hear two shots, one in the head, one in the chest. His body is now in the morgue here in Gaza City while Palestinian security officials comb the area, comb the restaurant for clues as to who may have carried out this attack -- Carol.

LIN: Matthew Chance reporting live from Gaza.
