George W. Bush Meets With Democratic Senator John Breaux

Aired December 15, 2000 - 3:04 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We are going to break in with some more political news now, something else for the anchors down there at "TALKBACK LIVE" to chew over. And that will be a meeting in the Austin, Texas statehouse between Governor George W. Bush and U.S. Senator John Breaux of Louisiana, who have been meeting most of the day. We are about to be fed a videotape of the two men, in which George Bush will reveal some of what went on in their meeting together.

We have no audio at the moment. But we are working on that situation. As you know, John Breaux -- John -- OK, we are -- what are we going to do? We're going to get back to the tape? This is a pool tape. And they are having problems with the pool rolling this tape. But, as you know, John Breaux was generally considered to be one of the people that the new Bush administration would want. One rumor going around was that he was being considered for Energy secretary.

We do not know if John Breaux was asked to be in the Bush administration. He's not talking about it. But George Bush apparently will in this videotape we are about to see. The two men have been meeting in the Austin, Texas statehouse throughout most of the day. As you know, John Breaux is at the moderate middle of the Senate, which is now 50-50. Should he decide to go with the Bush administration, that would leave a Republican majority, because the governor of Louisiana, presumably -- who is Republican -- would appoint a Republican to replace John Breaux.

We don't know that that's going to happened or if that was even broached between these two men. But we know that the governor of Texas has made it part of his mission here in the next four years to reach across the aisle, to be uniter, not a divider. Apparently, the pool is having massive problems getting this tape to us. So we're just going to -- we have it. OK. Now we don't.

We are going back to "TALKBACK LIVE" until we get all this straightened out.
