Gunman Holds Teacher Hostage in Arizona Elementary School

Aired October 24, 2000 - 3:14 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: Lou Waters again here at CNN Center.

We have new information to pass along with regards to a story developing in Glendale, Arizona, a suburb of Phoenix. It's in the fast growing Northwest Valley, where a school, Pioneer Elementary, now is surrounded by police vehicles because of a report of a student inside holding a 9 mm handgun and an eighth grade teacher, -- possibly the teacher's class -- also hostage in one of the temporary trailer- like facilities at the school.

The rest of the school is locked up, meaning, according to a school spokeswoman, students and teachers are being locked into their classrooms. Some students, we are told, are being escorted -- if they can be escorted away safely -- from the school to buses in the area, and being taken to nearby Cactus High School where they can be reunited with their parents.

The parents, meantime, are being asked by the school district to remain calm, and stay away from the campus, allow the emergency personnel now on the scene to do their jobs. The initial report was that a gunman wearing a mask and fatigues was holding 10 elementary students hostage in a classroom along with the teacher. That may or may not be the case. It may be the teacher only. That has still to be sorted out. But we do have an -- apparently a student holding someone in a classroom -- a temporary classroom alongside the school -- hostage.

It may be the eighth grade teacher. But we are continuing to follow the story. As soon as we know more, we will pass it right along.
