Pentagon Will Not Stop Anthrax Vaccine

Aired September 28, 2000 - 12:20 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

FRANK SESNO, CNN ANCHOR: Just a few moments ago, we told you that the Pentagon was considering a decision on the Anthrax vaccine. We have one now. We go back to Jamie McIntyre, who is there with the news -- Jamie.

JAMIE MCINTYRE, CNN MILITARY CORRESPONDENT: Well, Frank, the decision is not to suspend the Anthrax shots at this time because the Pentagons says there is insufficient evidence that this worker's death at the Michigan plant was, in fact, related to the Anthrax vaccine.

They point the out that he died two months ago, and two months after receiving his last Antrax shot, and that the cause of death at the time was not cited as anything related to Anthrax.

So the Pentagon say, given the safety record of this vaccine and given the threat that the troops face, they will continue to vaccinate them. If an investigation turns up any actual link between the vaccine and this death, they will reconsider. But at this point, the Anthrax vaccinations will continue -- Frank.

SESNO: Jamie McIntyre, at the Pentagon.
