Two Small Planes Collide in New Jersey; At Least 2 Dead

Aired August 9, 2000 - 10:00 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

BILL HEMMER, CNN ANCHOR: In the state of New Jersey, where emergency units are at the scene following a midair collision between two small planes. It is said, at least two people were killed as a result. The crash came right about 8:00 a.m. Eastern time this morning, near the border of Burlington and Florence Townships, that's in southern New Jersey, just about 10 miles south of Trenton, New Jersey.

You can see the flames right here on the ground, and following the in-flight crash, it slammed into a red brick house, engulfing that in flames. And inside the home, a couple and a dog did manage to escape.

Both homes right there you see heavily damaged as a result today.

The other plane landed in a nearby field where two bodies also were discovered, along with debris from the plane; another house damaged, as I mention, had pieces from one of the plane located on top of the roof of that house.

At this time, there are not word on what types of planes where involved, where the planes originated, or where they were headed. It is also unknown if both victims are from the same plane. The FAA, the Federal Aviation Administration, investigating that right now. More on this story a bit later. We do have crews on the way to the scene there in southern New Jersey. More on that throughout the morning right here on CNN.
