Tony Coelho To Resign From Gore Presidential Campaign; Commerce Secretary Daley to Replace Him

Aired June 15, 2000 - 11:47 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

DARYN KAGAN, CNN ANCHOR: We're getting word that there's been a big shakeup in Al Gore's presidential campaign.

Our John King, senior White House correspondent, breaking that story. Let's go to John right now with the latest -- John.

JOHN KING, CNN SENIOR WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Well, Daryn, it is a shakeup that will not only affect the top management of the Gore campaign, but also President Clinton's cabinet. CNN has learned that later today, Tony Coelho will announce that he is stepping down as chairman of the Gore presidential campaign for heath reasons. Mr. Coelho has been hospitalized this week for treatment of an inflamed colon. That announcement due later today that he is stepping down for health reasons.

Replacing him will be the commerce secretary, Bill Daley. Mr. Daley the brother of the Chicago mayor, Richard Daley, a man very well-regarded in Democratic politics. He has been a top point man for the administration on trade and other economic issues. But he will announce later today. Once Mr. Coelho announces that he is stepping down, Mr. Daley will announce that he is leaving the cabinet and he will become the national chairman of the Gore for president campaign -- Daryn.

KAGAN: John, and then who goes into Bill Daley's seat in the cabinet?

KING: Obviously that would create an opening for the president to pick a new commerce secretary. White House officials won't confirm these developments yet so they won't speculate on who could succeed Mr. Daley at the Commerce Department. We expect that story to develop today. First, though, we're looking -- the sequence will go like this: Mr. Coelho will announce he is stepping down, then Mr. Daley will make his announcement. And, of course, there will now be a vacancy in the Clinton cabinet for the final seven months of the president's term -- Daryn.

KAGAN: All right, more to come on this story. John King at the White House, thank you very much.

Once again, Tony Coelho stepping down as the head of Al Gore's presidential campaign. He's citing medical reasons. In his place, Commerce Secretary Bill Daley. TO ORDER A VIDEO OF THIS TRANSCRIPT, PLEASE CALL 800-CNN-NEWS OR USE OUR SECURE ONLINE ORDER FORM LOCATED AT www.fdch.com
