Million Mom March Brings Issue of Gun Control to Nation's Attention

Aired May 14, 2000 - 9:05 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: Mothers across the nation have chosen this Mothers' Day to demand stricter regulations on handguns. They're gathering by the thousands in at least 70 U.S. cities, including the nation's capital.

And that's where we find CNN's Bob Franken on the Mall for the Million Mom March.

Good morning, Bob.

BOB FRANKEN, CNN CORRESPONDENT: Good morning, Miles.

And of course, mothers on the other side have formed a group called Second Amendment Sisters. They too will be demonstrating today. But this was brought on by the advocates of gun control, now being called the Million Mom March. Preparations under way here for a march that nine months ago was really not even really in anybody's imagination.

Now, what they're waiting right now for the first major event of the morning, which is at the White House. It's running a bit late, but at the White House President Clinton is going to welcome a large group of the marchers, and then there's going to be about six hours of festivity here, if you want to call it that, advocacy for gun control.

They're going to be -- many of the celebrities who are in favor of gun control are going to be making their case, while at the same time, as I mentioned, the Second Amendment Sisters, the ones who favor enforcement of existing gun laws and gun safety provisions, will be holding their own rally not too far from here.

So it's going to be a day, and Mothers' Day 200, which is devoted to the question of guns and the availability of guns, of course, all of this brought on by the several tragedies which we've all witnessed, sadly, in the United States over the last several months and years, and debate whether those tragedies were caused by the ready availability of gun, or because, in fact, the laws were not being enforced.

This is not the only rally that is going on. As a matter of fact, in about 70 cities in the United States and probably elsewhere, there are going to be other rallies, as Mothers' Day, people are trying to say we have to focus on the gun issue, we have to break the stalemate one way or the other, which has tied up legislation in the Congress.

About a year ago, a piece of legislation passed in the Senate. It would, among other things, extend the background checks at gun shows. It would require child safety locks. The people who are advocating gun control here say they want to add to that registration and licensing.

On the other side, as I said, there are people who say none of that is necessary, just exist the -- to enforce the existing laws, and, of course, to control the media violence, which they say has caused so many of the problems.

It's a burning debate, a debate that goes on. The volume is raised today with this Million Mom March. And the question, of course, is, will that translate into some sort of political action -- Miles.

O'BRIEN: All right, CNN's Bob Franken, watching things for us at the Mall. President Clinton and Hillary Rodham Clinton are expected to make a statement of support in the Million Mom March very shortly. CNN is planning to bring that to you live.
