| Sunday Morning NewsSome Mothers See Million Mom March For Gun Control as Personal MemorialAired May 14, 2000 - 8:36 a.m. ETTHIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. KYRA PHILLIPS, CNN ANCHOR: For some of the moms marching in favor of tougher gun laws, today's demonstration will be a personal memorial. CNN's Frank Buckley looks at two marchers who lost loved ones to gun violence. (BEGIN VIDEOTAPE) FRANK BUCKLEY, CNN CORRESPONDENT (voice-over): The woman behind the message is a mother, Joan Gold of New York, who plans to join other mothers in Washington in the Million Mom March. JOAN GOLD, NEW YORK AREA COORDINATOR: When you get mothers who are going to band together who are afraid for their children, that's when our claws kind of come out and we say what in god's name is going on? We have got to protect our children. BUCKLEY: Billye Ducker is also marching, in memory of her son. Twenty-year-old Brian Ducker was shot and killed eight years ago by a man believed to be mentally unstable. BILLYE DUCKER, SHOOTING VICTIM'S MOTHER: I'm hoping that the future generation don't, mothers like me, grandmothers like me don't have to suffer the way I did. BUCKLEY: Ducker says recent incidents of gun violence against children like the shootings at Columbine High School contributed to her decision to march. DUCKER: You know, I sat and watched this with tears coming down my face. I couldn't believe all these children were killed. It just broke my heart and I felt for every mother, every grandmother, every parent. BUCKLEY: Joan Gold is helping to coordinate a group of mothers from the Queens area of New York. GOLD: We're going to be sending a clear message to Congress that enough is enough and we will actually stand there and say we will vote them out unless they listen to us. BUCKLEY: Organizers of the march are advocating what they call common sense gun laws such as licensing and registration. But critics say there are already too many gun laws that go unenforced. Still, Gold and others believe the march may result in change. GOLD: We can send a man to the moon but we can't have a gun that has a child safety lock on it to protect them? It doesn't make any sense. We can do it here. BUCKLEY: Billye Ducker agrees. DUCKER: A mother's voice is very, very powerful. BUCKLEY: Frank Buckley, CNN, New York.
