Braves GM Reacts to Arbitrator's Reduction of John Rocker's Suspension

Aired March 1, 2000 - 3:02 p.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

LOU WATERS, CNN ANCHOR: We're going to the Atlanta Braves training camp in Orlando, Florida. The general manager is reacting to an arbitration ruling on John Rocker earlier in the day.

JOHN SCHUERHOLZ, BRAVES GENERAL MANAGER: You're all aware of the arbitrator's ruling in the John Rocker suspension matter. And if you are not, let me simply say that the arbitrator has ruled that the suspension is reduced and that John Rocker will be available team in the regular season on April 18 and that he will you allowed to participate in spring training immediately.

John, when last I spoke with him, was on his way to Orlando, and we anticipate and expect that he will participate in our workout tomorrow. As you probably also know, based on the information that you might have, or if not, you'll get it from Jim Schultz, our public relations director, the fine that was initially levied has been reduced, as well as the length and the terms of the suspension.

With that I will simply say that, as we did when the commissioner made his ruling, we accepted the commissioner's ruling, and abided by it, and we accept and will abide by the arbitrator's ruling in this incident and move forward and do what we've come here to spring training to do, and that is to put our team together in the best fashion we can and have the most successful 2000 season that's possible, with our goal focused, once again, on winning a National League championship and hopefully getting back into the World Series, so.

WATERS: There you have it, general manager of the Atlanta Braves John Schuerholz saying that the suspension and fine against John Rocker by Major League Baseball and commissioner Bud Selig has been reduced, allowing Rocker to report to Brave's spring training camp tomorrow, and he will workout with the team. He will available for play on April 18. The whole incident was over disparaging comments about minorities and women, gays and people with AIDS by John Rocker in "Sports Illustrated" magazine. He was -- the punishment was a levy of a suspension until May, a very heavy fine of $20,000. Both have been reduced.

They're be more on this story throughout the day on CNN.
