THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED. MILES O'BRIEN, CNN ANCHOR: First lady Hillary Rodham Clinton steps from the sidelines to the center of the political stage today. The first lady will officially announce her candidacy for the U.S. Senate seat in New York State. CNN's senior White House correspondent John King is in Purchase, New York, where the announcement will be made. Good morning, John. JOHN KING, CNN SR. WHITE HOUSE CORRESPONDENT: Good morning to you, Miles. It is, as you just noted, a presidential election year in the United States, but perhaps no race in the country will draw more attention than the Senate race that officially gets underway here today in New York. The first lady of the United States, Hillary Rodham Clinton, recently moved to New York. Today she will formally declare her candidacy for the seat now held by Daniel Patrick Moynihan. He is retiring. The first lady's likely opponent, the Republican mayor of New York City, Rudy Giuliani, two very well known personalities across the country competing for a Senate seat here in New York State. Now the first lady, well known around the world. But let's take a closer look at her biography as she prepares to announce her candidacy today. Born October 26th, 1947 in Chicago, Illinois, that makes her 52 years old. She graduated from Wellesley College in 1969 then the Yale Law school in 1973. It was there she met William Jefferson Clinton and they were married on October 11th, 1975. The Clintons have one child, their daughter Chelsea, born in 1980, and she has never held elective office, Hillary Rodham Clinton, as she announces her campaign today, this her first run for elected office. She was a partner in the Rose Law Firm in Little Rock, Arkansas. Some of her dealing there, of course, the subject of scrutiny by the independent counsel. She was the chairwoman of the Arkansas Education Standards Committee, helping her husband when he was the governor, also the founder of the Arkansas Advocates for Children and Their Families. And, of course, she's remembered across the country as the chairwoman of the president's health care reform task force back in 1994 and Mrs. Clinton has served on several corporate boards, including the Legal Services Corporation, The Children's Defense Fund, Wal-Mart and the Little Rock-based company TCBY. Now, if the election were held today, the latest Marist Institute poll shows the first lady losing 47 percent to 40 percent and when New Yorkers are asked who would best fight for them in the United States Senate, Mayor Giuliani gets the edge, 52 percent to 44 percent. O'BRIEN: Our apologies. The audio on that transmission obviously was failing us. We'll try to get those gremlins worked out and get back to John King in just a moment.
