CNN20: Reginald Denny on 'Larry King Live,' January 18, 1993

Aired January 18, 2000 - 9:37 a.m. ET

THIS IS A RUSH TRANSCRIPT. THIS COPY MAY NOT BE IN ITS FINAL FORM AND MAY BE UPDATED.

ANNOUNCER: Bringing you the world for 20 years, this is CNN.

(BEGIN VIDEOTAPE)

LARRY KING, HOST, "LARRY KING LIVE": If he'd come along 10 minutes sooner, if he'd taken a different road, Reginald Denny might not be a household word today. But Denny was on the wrong road at the wrong time just as the riots began in southeast Los Angeles. With no police around, he was dragged from his truck and beaten almost to death. Now, 90 stitches and several surgeries later, Denny is talking about the beating.

OK, what happened?

REGINALD DENNY, BEATING VICTIM: It's an amazing sight to see when something is terribly wrong but you don't know -- I didn't know why or what it was. It was such a weird sight.

KING: What did you see?

DENNY: Broken glass, people taking stuff out of a truck that was in front of me, and cars going every which way -- I mean, up and over curves and just doing crazy stuff, you know, and lots of glass; people screaming, tires screeching; and just thinking, you know, what am I going to do to get through this. And thinking I've got an 18-wheeler, I'm just going to tiptoe across this intersection and get on down the road.

From the time my right window broke out from whatever hit it, I knew, after that, nothing.

KING: Do you hate those guys who did this?

DENNY: No, they were confused.

KING: Don't hate them?

DENNY: No, they were just...

KING: Think they're going to pay a price for it?

DENNY: I don't know. I would almost hope that perhaps the time they've spent they've perhaps learned something.
