MINI ECLIPSE
From our perspective, Mercury crosses the face of the sun about 13 times each century. The rare planetary transit, documented in this 1999 image, again takes place on May 7. Europe, Africa and Asia will have a view of the migrating planet as it glides like a black dot across the bright solar disk. Experts caution to watch only with protective techniques and equipment, similar to those used for conventional solar eclipses.
