PLANET SHADE
This rare photograph of the night side of Saturn came from the Voyager I spacecraft when it flew past the ringed planet in November 1980. Such a view would be impossible from the Earth, where telescopes can see only the side of Saturn lit up by the sun. The next time a camera might capture the sun's shadow cast across the gas giant's rings is when another NASA probe, Cassini, arrives in the Saturn system in July 2004.
