NASA's Chandra X-ray observatory has detected a halo of hot gas around a galaxy that resembles our own Milky Way. Data from Chandra, shown in blue and purple, provide the first unambiguous evidence for the halo that surrounds galaxy NGC 4631. The observations may give astronomers clues about whether the Milky Way also has a halo.
A team of astronomers, led by Daniel Wang of the University of Massachusetts at Amherst, observed NGC 4631 with Chandra on April 15, 2000.
