Remembering John Holliman

September 16, 1998
Web posted at 6:41 PM ET

(Editors note: Today would have been the day we published John's latest column. In its place, Scott Woelfel, Editor in Chief for CNN Interactive, remembers why this was a labor of love for John.)

John Holliman was to be lead anchor with Walter Cronkite during next month's launch of John Glenn on Space Shuttle Discovery

I knew John Holliman for 13 years. I worked with him during shuttle launches, prison riots, was on the other end of the phone while he reported from Baghdad, and called him a colleague on countless other occasions during my years with CNN television and CNN Interactive.

The best way to remember John is through an anecdote. There are so many, and they are all wonderful, but there is one in particular which I think is appropriate for this space. One day, when John was first considering writing his "View From Space" column I approached him. Almost sheepishly, I asked if he would be willing to include his e-mail address on the column and to answer mail from his readers. I was reluctant to ask this knowing that with a correspondent's incredibly busy schedule this can be an enormous imposition.

As my question hung in the air between us, John looked at me with a puzzled expression, as if he didn't understand. It was at that instant I realized I was the one who didn't understand. In John's mind, the opportunity to converse with the people who enjoyed his reporting wasn't an imposition, it was an honor. Television can be a remote medium, its one-way nature isolating reporters from their public. But here was an interactive medium which brought speaker and listener together and often reversed those very roles.

As we all know, John jumped at the chance both to write the column and take the e-mail. We'll never know how many messages he read or answered, but we can be sure that in John's mind it was never enough. I thank you as I know he would thank you for your thoughts, comments and questions. Your interaction is what made John's "View From Space" itself a glimpse at a unique and irreplaceable individual.
