Satellite successfully completes lunar fly-by

satallite

The HGS-1 satellite is now on a three-day return trip to Earth orbit, after successfully swinging around the moon Wednesday.

The satellite used lunar gravity to slingshot around the moon and change directions. It came as close as 5,000 miles from the lunar surface at about 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT).

On Saturday, satellite controllers will begin braking maneuvers to settle the satellite into its proper orbit around the equator.
