Satellite flys by moon in tricky salvage mission
Real-time position animation
Live video
The HGS-1 satellite slingshots around the moon today, in an Apollo 13-like maneuver to reach its proper orbit. It's the first time this procedure has been used since Apollo 13 in 1970, and the first time ever for a commercial space craft.
The moon fly-by will last several hours, with the satellite coming as close as 5,000 miles of the moon's surface at 3:30 p.m. EDT (1930 GMT).
