More than 1,300 bales of hay were used to provide insulation 20 inches thick for the innovative home's walls, ceilings and floors. So effective is the insulation that the house has no furnace -- a water heater and plastic tubes running beneath the floors keep the home a toasty 70 degrees even in the dead of winter.
